Solaia, a serendipity
Solaia was first produced almost accidentally, in 1978. In that year, the Cabernet grapes which were meant to be used for other production were of an excellent quality higher in quantity than usual. Piero Antinori decided to bottle the excess production of this varietal by itself.
The same blend was then made again in 1979 with 20% sangiovese more. The Cabernet Franc came to do some corrections. Solaia is only produced on exceptionnal vintages.
The wines is made from the sunniest part of the Tignanello hill, with the best grapes grown in the best vineyard. Solaia is the best selections of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese grown in the Solaia vineyard. The wine is aged in barriques for about 12 months and for a further 12 months in the bottles. And of course deserves to be aged 15 to 20 years. The cellar which houses the barriques of Solaia, with its classic stone ceiling, was born side-by-side which dates back to the 16th century.
One of the best italian vintage. Intensely fruity and complex with a good structure, quite well-balanced, with light tannins. Displays flavor with a strong regional character.
Extremely intense with a ruby colour. After a while in the glass, the wine gradually releases delicate hints of mint and liquorice. Suprising thing, iodine flavor comes up in palate clear fruit and tannins.
Very complex wine with a full-bodied structure. The ripe fruit is intense. The 2007 has a strong individual identity. Tannins are harmonious. Long persistent finish.
Palate is pretty smooth thanks to the perfectly ripe grapes along with aromas of coffee, chocolate, mint, and licorice. Impressive, well-structure, characterized by great elegance and velvety tannins.
